Evaluation of Online Resources
http://library.thinkquest.org/19689/data/menu.html
This thinkquest focuses on what you can do to help. You can click on different endangered species and find out facts about each. There is an interactive slide show, a picture gallery, and sound clips. There are also multiple links to other sites that give endangered species information.
http://www.kidsplanet.org/factsheets/map.html
This site lists animals and what continent they live on. Each animal is a hyperlink. When clicked on, the student would get information about that animal, including habitat, food, and lifespan.
http://www.wwf.org/
This website is multi-lingual. The homepage includes a list of 42 countries. When you click on the country the site comes up in that language. This would be very helpful for bilingual students. Each country’s link talks about the current animal issues in that country.
http://www.endangeredspecie.com/
This website separates information into separate categories. There is a fact category, kids corner, teacher’s information, books, laws, and a photo gallery. Students would also be able to research what they can do to help save a species.
http://www.eelink.net/EndSpp.old.bak/
I would use this site as a teacher information site. The esthetics are not as pleasing. It is more raw endangered species information. I would probably create my own presentation using this information. Some of the information includes species sorted by group, region, and current status.
http://www.bagheera.com/
This website has a wealth of information. It includes videos, feature stories on certain animals, resources and news. There is also a link for the students including classroom studies, classroom activities, and a glossary.
http://www.worldwildlife.org/endangered/
Owned by the famous WWF, this site focuses on how to keep animals safe. There are links for webcams, specific animal facts, and global conservation efforts. Students can donate to the WWF. Students can also “adopt” an endangered species. They would pay and receive a stuffed animal and cage. Money would be used by the WWF.
http://www.kidsplanet.org/
This is a site the students could visit at home. It includes links for fact as well as games and theme units. I would encourage students to read all the information and scroll through the many links. Students can print game results and bring them into school.
http://www.eagle.ca/~matink/themes/Endanger/specific.html
This site has specific animals that are either endangered or threatened. The animals are separated into groups: birds, fish, insects, mammals, reptiles & amphibians. Each animal in these categories is hyperlinked to an information page. This would be great for researching.
http://www.field-trips.org/sci/endanger/index.htm
A teacher website for a virtual field trip, the site includes many resources. The site includes many teacher resources for information before teaching. The field trip is loaded with questions and sources to find the information. An interesting format for a change of pace in the classroom.
