Home Pages:
- The WPUNJ web server is for the educational and administrative use of the entire
University community (students, faculty, and staff). The primary goal of WWW home
pages are to promote and support the mission and activities of the university.
Additionally, these pages should increase communication, simplify access to information,
and enhance the sense of "community" among the students, faculty, staff and administrators
of the university. Personal home pages must include a disclaimer stating that the page
does not reflect an official position of the University.
- Freedom of expression and creativity should be encouraged in the development of
personal home pages. The university should limit access to or the content of personal
home pages only if they:
- Violate any applicable laws, policies, procedures, and guidelines related to
university WEB sites or their contents.
- Promote any (non-university approved) commercial activities.
- Contain or provide direct access to material or information deemed
Inappropriate (i.e., obscene or pornographic materials) or deemed private
(i.e., students records or grades).
- Consume computer or network resources beyond the capacity of the university systems.
Web Design Principles
The WPUNJ Web is a public expression of the University, and as such its pages must
reflect the same high standards of quality expected from other WPUNJ publications. The
following principles have been constructed to provide guidelines on good design
practice and to promote consistency across all pages representing William Paterson
University. Only pages that follow these principles will be anchored to the WPUNJ home page.
- Identification
- All home pages (but not necessarily secondary pages) for departments, programs,
and other units at WPUNJ will identify themselves as part of "William Paterson University"
through the use of the WPUNJ icon.
- Departmental, etc., names are to be easily identifiable and completely spelled out.
- Home pages will include the name and e-mail of the responsible person or entity, e.g.,
sanchezj@wpunj.edu
- Top level pages (and preferably, secondary pages) will include a date of last update.
- A statement of copyright or restrictions on use are to be included as appropriate.
- Navigation
- Departmental pages will use the WPUNJ icon to link directly back to the home page.
- Second level pages anchored directly to the WPUNJ home page will include the WPUNJ
navigational bar. Other units are encouraged to include the navigational bar on their
pages as well.
- Within a set of pages of an administrative or departmental unit, each page should be
anchored back to the unit's home page.
- Presentation
- Large graphics and slow-loading pages are to be avoided, particularly on top level
navigational screens, without prior warning to the user.
- Notice should be given to the user if the capabilities of a specific browser are
required; however, units are encouraged to construct pages for the widest possible audience.
- Units are encouraged to use elements from the WPUNJ Graphics Web Library, particularly
the standard headers, footers, and navigational bar.
- Coding
- All pages will conform to the latest approved standard for coding HTML.
- If extensions to the standard are used in a page, essential information on the page must
also be capable of being used by most other browsers (including Lynx), or an alternate
"text-only" page must be created and maintained.
