Useful Web Sites for Teachers
Due to new technology, teachers have research tools right at their fingertips. Teachers no longer have to make weekly trips to the library because computers offer useful tools they can use right at home. Many web pages are offered online offering not only information to be used in the classroom, but also handouts that can be valuable in certain lessons. Teachers also can discuss their ideas with other teachers, which expands ideas and allows them to know what is available.

http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/transitions.htm
“Coherence: Transition Words” is the title of this website. It does
not give a great deal of explanation about transitional words, however this
should be the job of the educator. However, it summarizes the importance of
these words and gives a list of transition words to use in writing. Too many
young writers do not use or misuse transition or “linking” words
so this website may be very beneficial to them.
http://mathforum.org/dr.math/
“Ask Dr. Math” is a fabulous website. Any age can benefit from this.

that every student, parent, and teacher should be aware of.

examples for each term being explained.
http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/
This website is useful for students, parents, or teachers who are searching
for a brief explanation on a certain historical issue. It is titled “Social
Studies for Kids” and the site contains many topics but none go into great
detail, however, it is definitely a good starting point for reports or a great
site to help review for tests. It was easy to use; just click on a theme and
then use the pull-down menu to find your specific topic. The site also contains
book review and games.
http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/graphing/
“Create a Graph” is a fun site. Teachers, students, and parents
can create graphs. It asks you simple questions and then compiles the answers.
Pie charts, line graphs, par graphs, and area graphs can be created. What is
great about this site is that we know that students love to have their names,
hobbies, etc. mentioned in their word problems or stories. By polling students,
teachers can put student information into the graphs they are teaching and really
get the kids involved.
http://www.field-guides.com/index.htm
Being a non-member I could not do too much surfing on the “Tramline”
website, however I heard this site mentioned by several teachers. This site
can help bring interest to an otherwise not so interesting topic. It takes the
words out of books and puts them into pictures and movies online! I was able
to view the list of field trips and they are broken down into categories: science,
social studies, literature, and other. Next to the title of the field trip,
there is also a grade indicator. The site also contains a printable virtual
field tip permission slip.

video hints and field notes. They use these to find out which field area what
researched. They enter their answer and are entered into a drawing for a small
prize.
For teachers and parents
This website is extremely helpful and offered in English and Spanish. It explains
to parents in detail how help their children in math, why it looks different
then the math they had, how to help the teacher and how to help their student
get the most out of math. It also has different math challenges for parents
to do with their child.

Butterfly
http://www.learner.org/jnorth/
Journey North engages students in a global study of wildlife migration and seasonal
change. K-12 students share their own field observations with classmates across
North America. They track the coming of spring through the migration patterns
of monarch butterflies, bald eagles, robins, hummingbirds, mantees, whooping
cranes--and other birds and mammals, the budding of plants, changing sunlight
and other natural events. Find standards-based lesson plan, activities and information
to help students make local observations and fit them into a global context.
Widely considered a best-practices model for education, Journey North is the
nation’s premiere “citizen science” project for children.
The general public is also welcome to participate
http://www.thewildones.org/Animals/monarch.html
This website has information on many different animals. The great part of this
website is that schools can be members and put up information on animals they
studied. The other really wonderful aspect is that they have an “ask a
Scientist a question” page where students can email their questions directly
to scientists.

print out illustrations and charts to fill in information like parts of a butterfly
and labeling the stages of metamorphosis.
http://www.smm.org/sln/monarchs/we/we.html

This website is pretty straight forward information, but it is very comprehensive!.
http://www.mesquiteisd.org/imovie/monarchbutterfly.htm
This website has an incredibly charming, well-made movie of the stages of metamorphosis,
narrated by a small child. It is actual footage of the metamorphosis. The information

This website is more geared for teachers. Here teachers can find conservation
news and educational opportunities to bring to their classroom.
