Semiotics and Artificial Intelligence by Patrizia Violi

Although the methods, application and history of these disciples are quite different, author compares semiotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in this article.  The article first talk about the History of Semiotics, definitions of AI especially the NLP (natural Language Processing) and includes Interpretation and Understanding, Meaning and Knowledge Construction.

The issue of interpretation is central to semiotics. Theory of semiotics is nothing but general theory of interpretation, where semiosis, inferencing (or abduction in Peircian terms) and intelligent behavior are all concepts which define the same process from different perspectives.

Article mentions the simulated psychotherapeudic conversation between ELIZA and PARRY.

AI is viewed essentially as a powerful heuristic which does not necessarily claim to duplicate human cognitive processes, but rather makes it possible to text alternative models and verify different hypothesis.
