OVERVIEW

The purpose of this course is to help you develop strategies and skills for incorporating on-line resources and other technologies into your social studies teaching. The techniques dealt with in the course can be used to teach almost any subject in a variety of ways but the course will focus on ways of teaching history with primary documents and current events. We will experiment with ways of using technologies to relate the past to the present and thereby make history a more relevant subject for your students and a subject of critical thinking for them.

Your work in this course will focus on developing materials and methods for a history unit that you can teach in your classes. You will choose a historical subject, time period and theme, and identify a current social issue to which you can relate the historical subject. You will then develop on-line resources and other tools to help teach the unit. You will leave the course both with additional tools and skills and with a unit of materials that you can use in your classes.

The course will be taught primarily on-line. There will be four face-to-face meetings of the class, two during the first two weeks of the semester, one in the middle of the semester and one at the end of the semester.
