Pre-Professional Program in Biosciences
Pre-Professional Program of the College of Science and Health at William Paterson University is dedicated to prepare undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students for the entrance to professional schools in health-related sciences. Over the past seven years (1995-2001) 67% of all students in the program have gained admission to professional schools such as New Jersey Medical School (Newark, NJ), Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (Piscataway, NJ), Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Connecticut, Howard University, Medical College of Pennsylvania, University of Vermont, Ohio State University, State University of New York at Brooklyn, State University of New York at Stony Brook, Temple University, and Seton Hall University Program for Physician Assistant.

The Department of Biology has established a Pre-Physical Therapy Program in conjunction with the The New Jersey Medical School in Newark (UMDNJ). This 3-by-3 program of study will lead to a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from William Paterson and the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from New Jersey Medical School in Newark.

How do you benefit from William Paterson's Pre-Professional Program? We provide students with detailed information about careers in areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Optometry, Physical Therapy, and other health-related professions. Our Program committee will advise you in meeting the admission requirements, coach you for interviews, provide guidance with choosing the right school, assist you with completing your applications, and provide a letter of recommendation for your application to health-related graduate and professional schools.

How can you network with Pre-Professional students and health professionals? Join the Galen Society, a club for students interested in health-related professions. The Society takes trips to open houses of professional schools and invites professionals such as physicians, veterinarians, and dentists to speak at their meetings. Alumni who are now in professional schools visit regularly and share their experiences with Galen Society students.

If you are already enrolled at William Paterson University and you plan to attend professional schools, please make an appointment with the chair of the pre-professional committee, Dr. Claire Leonard (leonardc@wpunj.edu). If you are an undergraduate student at a College or University other than William Paterson University and plan to transfer, you are advised to contact the Admissions office for an application. Students interested in the postbaccalaureate pre-professional program are advised to contact the Admissions office and apply to William Paterson University as a 2nd degree undergraduate student in Biology. Careful planning years in advance is advised.

For any questions concerning the Pre-Professional Program at William Paterson University, please contact Dr. Claire Leonard (leonardc@wpunj.edu) .

Pre-requisite science courses for Medical School: Most Medical Schools require that applicants have taken 8 credits in Biology, Physics, Calculus, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry (all courses with laboratory) and one year of English. A solid background in the humanities is expected. Courses in foreign languages or advanced science are a plus but are not required. For Biology majors, the Behavior and Physiology track is recommended.

At WPUNJ, we recommend that pre-medical students take the following science courses:

  • Biology: BIO163 General Biology I, BIO164 General Biology II
  • Physics: PHYS255 College Physics I, PHYS256 College Physics II
  • General Chemistry: CHEM160 General Chemistry I lecture, CHEM060 General Chemistry I Laboratory, CHEM161 General Chemistry II lecture, CHEM061 General Chemistry II laboratory
  • Organic Chemistry: CHEM251 Organic Chemistry I lecture, CHEM051 Organic Chemistry I Laboratory, CHEM252 Organic Chemistry II lecture, CHEM052 Organic Chemistry II laboratory
  • Mathematics: MATH160 Calculus I and MATH230 Statistics or MATH161 Calculus II
  • English: ENG 110 , ENG 150

We recommend to take the requirements in the following sequence: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. In addition, upper level electives in Biochemistry and General Microbiology are recommended.

MCAT: All medical school applicants are advised to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) in their junior year. The test is administered by the American College Testing Service twice a year in April and August. MCAT applications may be obtained from the pre-professional advisor or from the AAMC. MCAT courses are offered by Kaplan, Princeton Review, Exam Crackers and Bette Blank.

GPA: The median Grade Point Average (GPA) of most matriculated Medical School students is 3.2 - 3.7. The average GPA for individual Medical Schools can be found in the handbook Medical School Admissions Requirements.

Extracurricular activities:

  • Research: Most WPUNJ medical school applicants have participated in research projects at William Paterson University or laboratories off-campus. Through your research work you can demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to research. As a physician you will have to keep up with the latest developments in medicine such as new drugs that come on the market. Ask your Biology professors about research opportunities or contact the Center For Research.
  • Volunteer work: Students should have demonstrated their commitment and dedication to medicine through regular volunteer work in a clinical environment. As volunteer you will be exposed to the daily routine of health professionals and you can practice to communicate with patients. You will learn if medicine is right for you. Many hospitals in the area have established an office for volunteers where you can sign up. The following hospitals wait for your calls:

Letters of Recommendation

Upon request, the Pre-Professional Committee will submit a composite letter of recommendation together with the four to five letters of recommendation by individual professors.
