Opportunities For Students
(Contact Dr. Risley for Details)

I maintain a file (my office) of off-campus research and course opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. These range from highly-competitive research opportunities that are federally funded to volunteer positions with research scientists and to courses for undergraduate or graduate credit. These programs are offered at various times of the year and differ considerably in length, cost, availability, criteria for selection, and geographic location.
The Department of Biology is able to fund student participation in off-campus summer research/course programs. We have sent students to: Arizona (American Museum of Natural History Field Station), Iowa (Hughes Foundation research internship), Maine/New Hampshire (Shoals Marine Laboratory), New Jersey (Morris County Medical Examiner's Office), New York (SUNY-Albany biomedical research), Australia (dolphin behavior; reforestation of tropical rain forest), and Costa Rica (turtle conservation). (Contact Dr. Claire Leonard or Dr. Risley for more information)

Student research opportunities with faculty at William Paterson are announced as they occur (priority to enrolled WPU students).

Research

Since moving to New Jersey in 1988, I have conducted ecological research that has examined contributions of herbivorous insects to cycling of nutrients, decomposition of foliar litter, distribution of ticks and ecological dynamics of Lyme disease, diversity of arthropods in forest canopies, and ecology of insectivorous bats. These studies have taken place in the Pinelands of southern NJ, forests of northern NJ, and forest "islands" in New York City. The theme which interests me most is the connection between ecological processes taking place in the forest canopy and associated processes that occur in/on the soil. In the late 1990s I shifted my primary research focus to bats. These studies have included mist netting, acoustic monitoring, radio telemetry, analysis of blood for West Nile virus, and analysis of tissues and hair for heavy metals. Current projects are funded by the Federal Aviation Administration (contaminant-related work in Atlantic City, NJ) and the US Fish & Wildlife Service (endangered species work at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge).

I invite both undergraduate and graduate students to participate in my field-oriented projects...several have co-authored publications in refereed journals.
