Notes for English Majors seeking Teaching Certification with the College of Education

The Departments in the College of Education periodically update and revise their requirements for the various Teaching Certification Programs they offer, and not all requirements are covered on the English advisement forms; students must check with the appropriate departments in the College of Education for specifics.

English majors interested in receiving New Jersey State Teaching Certification in Early Childhood (P-3), Elementary Education (K-8), or Secondary Education (K-12) must first take ANTH 201 or 202 (or an approved social science diversity course such as SOC 337, SOC 241, ANTH 356, WS 307, ANTH 240, AASC 315, AACS 214, or POL 321). In each course you will receive information about the mandatory Pre-Admission Workshop (PAW) for the College of Education, and you will apply for admission to the College of Education at the PAW. To be accepted into a teaching certification program you must have a grade point average of 2.75 or better.

Most teaching certification students take PSY 110 in their first year. For Elementary and Early Childhood Certification students, two math courses (MATH 110 or 111 or higher) and PSY 210 are also required.

For students who declared their English Major before June 2008, the College of Education recommends that students take Eng 402 Development of the English Language and Eng 403 Grammar and Style; in addition, it is recommended that those students seeking P-3 or K-8 certification take Eng 337 Children’s Literature, and that those students seeking K-12 certification take Eng 336 Adolescent Literature. Any of these courses may count as English Electives, while Eng 402 and 403 may also fulfill the English Major’s Linguistic Requirement.

For students who declare their English Major after May 2008, new English major course requirements apply—see above.
