Black Earth - Pine Island, New York

The muck soils in the vicinity of Pine Island, Orange County, New York are a unique natural heritage.  These soils accumulated over thousands of years as the consequence of a very special combination of bedrock geology, topography, glacial geology and climate.  This site describes some of the features of this area and its agricultural uses.
