Although there is no index, a classified list of headwords aids the reader in locating related topics, as do numerous see also references, cleverly marked by an Egyptian eye hieroglyph. - One of the more recent comprehensive surveys of ancient Near East scholarship. Lengthy essays cover all major topic areas, and all entries include helpful bibliographies. An excellent tool for research topic development.
- Dictionary of Classical Antiquities
- Online version of an 1894 German reference work written by Oskar Seyffert. Contains over 2,600 entries. Although the scholarship is dated, the book is still very useful as a reference for mythological figures. One of several volumes available from the Ancient Library's Bookshelf of full-text resources in the public domain.
- Encyclopedia of Ancient Greece / Nigel Wilson, editor. - New York: Routledge, 2006. - xxvii, 800 p. ; 29 cm. - Includes bibliographical references and indexes. - Call Number: REF DF16.E52
- This one-volume encyclopedia covers both "the traditional 'classical' Greek period (Homer through Alexander the Great) and subject matter through the fourth century CE. The work contains lists of alphabetical entries, thematic entries, and a chronology of individuals. Greek name forms that entered English from Latin have been retained, with some exceptions. Greek names transliterated into English start roughly at 565 CE (Justinian I's death). Each entry has its own bibliography." [Choice]

- Modest one-volume reference on ancient Greece covers over 1,000 topics in entries ranging from 300 to 1,000 words, with cross-references. Topics include real and mythological figures, cities, regions, and institutions; a small selection of maps and drawings supplement the text, along with a brief bibliography at the end. Not the best resource of its kind, but still helpful for undergraduate courses.

- In addition to Greece, this three-volume reference also covers Rome, Egypt, Meso-America, Africa, and the Far East, covering the period up to about 700 C.E.. Introductory essays provide overviews of 26 major subject themes (e.g., art and architecture, death and burial, science, war and weapons, etc.), and the remainder of the set contains 1,169 articles ranging from 250 to 2,500 words. The encyclopedia also includes a time line, pronunciation guides, a glossary, and indexes to people and subjects. A good reference and a good starting point for research topic development.

The essays, which range from a single paragraph to several pages depending on the subject, are informed by recent scholarship and archaeological findings. Most entries contain bibliographic or textual references. Note: The Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization (Call Number: REF DE5.O94) is a shortened version of the Dictionary, with fewer entries, larger print, and illustrations.

- Diotima: Materials for the Study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World
- Launched in 1995, Diotima aims to be a comprehensive source of information and resources for the study of gender in antiquity.
