Data and Research on Immigration and Refugees in the United States
- American FactFinder
- First launched in 1999, American FactFinder is intended to provide the public with an easy-to-use tool for browsing, searching, and mapping statistical data. The data stored here is derived from the 1990 and 2000 Census, the 1997 Economic Census, and the American Community Survey. Downloadable data sets are also available. With its graphical interface and well-written help screens, this is a convenient lookup site.

- Are Immigrants a Drain on the Public Fisc? State and Local Impacts in New Jersey
- This study, written by Deborah L. Garvey, Thomas J. Espenshade, and James M. Scully in April 2001, uses 1990 census data for New Jersey to examine the extent to which immigrant-native differences in observed average fiscal impacts is due to something inherent to nativity status, and how much is due to other ways in which immigrant and native households differ. The authors find that differences in households' socioeconomic characteristics account for most of the differential impact of immigrant households on state and local government balance sheets and that nativity status per se has little to do with immigrants' higher fiscal burdens. The paper contains several tables containing New Jersey data for immigrant school enrollment and educational attainment. This version of the student also contains full regression results for the abbreviated version published in Social Science Quarterly 83(2): 537-553, June 2002.

- Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS)
- CILS is a longitudinal study designed to study the adaptation process of the immigrant second generation, which is defined broadly as U.S.-born children with at least one foreign-born parent or children born abroad but brought at an early age to the United States. The original survey was conducted with large samples of second-generation children attending the 8th and 9th grades in public and private schools in the metropolitan areas of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale in Florida and San Diego, California. A second survey was conducted by the time of high school graduation in 1995-96, and a third by the time respondents averaged 24 years of age in 2002-03. Results of this longitudinal study have appeared in a number of publications, including Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation, winner of the Distinguished Publication Award of the American Sociological Association in 2002, and its companion volume, Ethnicities: Children of Immigrants in America (University of California Press, 2001). A special issue is planned for 2005 bearing results from the last survey from the study. Preliminary findings were presented by Center Director Alejandro Portes as the 2003 Pitirim Sorokin lecture, sponsored by the American Sociological Association. Data from the first two surveys have been placed in the public domain and are available in CMD's data archive.

- New Jersey Immigration Factsheets (Federation for American Immigration Reform)
- The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is a national, nonprofit, public-interest, membership organization of concerned citizens who share a common belief that U.S. immigration policies must be reformed. FAIR seeks to improve border security, to stop illegal immigration, and to promote immigration levels at rates of about 300,000 a year. It's state-by-state factsheet pages collect together data on immigrants from a variety of public sources and present the information for selected large cities, counties and metropolitan areas.

- Office of Immigration Statistics (U.S. Department of Homeland Security)
- The Office of Immigration Statistics compiles data and information used to inform policy and analyze the effects of immigration in the United States. The page provides access to the Yearbook of Immigration Statistics (1996-Present), reports of refugee arrivals, statistical profiles of legal permanent residents and naturalized citizens (available in spreadsheet tables organized by country of birth, state of residence, and Metropolitan Statistical Area of residence), and links to other sites providing information on immigrants.

- Office of Refugee Resettlement (Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)
- The Office of Refugee Resettlement plans, develops and directs implementation of a comprehensive program for domestic refugee and entrant resettlement assistance. It develops, recommends, and issues program policies, procedures and interpretations to provide program direction. Its site includes useful annual data tables on refugee arrivals by country of origin and state of initial resettlement for fiscal years 2000 through 2004.

- The Condition of Education (National Center for Education Statistics)
- This site provides an integrated collection of the indicators and analyses published in The Condition of Education, 2000–2005. - Dropout Rates in the United States: 1999 (National Center for Education Statistics)
- This report presents national data on high school dropout rates and high school completion rates from 1972 to 1999. It also provides state level information for the 1990's. Apart from showing basic rates, the report studies the relationship between various individual and family characteristics on one hand, and high school dropout and completion propensity on the other. Among the factors considered in the report (in a section on Hispanic students) is immigration status.

- New Jersey Report Cards
- The "New Jersey School Report Card" was created following passage of a 1995 state law requiring the annual comparative assessment of schools based on thirty-five different measurements in the following categories: school environment, students, student performance indicators, staff, and district finances. "No Child Left Behind School, District, and State Reports" are mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind Act and conform with the accountability and reporting requirements required by the law. They are based on the state assessment data with the NCLB conditions applied.

- No Child Left Behind Resources (New Jersey Department of Education)
- The state's NCLB page contains links to numerous resources, including the text of federal statutes and state regulations which provide the foundation for education policy in New Jersey; State policy guidance documents which provide school districts with detailed information on how to implement education policy; reports submitted by the NJDOE to the federal government, as required by NCLB; and other materials.

- School Enrollment Data (from the Current Population Survey, U.S. Census Bureau)
- School Enrollment data are collected annually in the October Current Population Survey (CPS) for the Nation. Detailed information from recent surveys and historical trends in selected topics are listed on this page, with an archive of older reports back to 1962. Only national-level data is available for foreign-born school enrollment in these reports. More detail on school enrollment for states, metropolitan areas, and more specific geographies is collected in the decennial census. When it is fully implemented, the American Community Survey (ACS) will be the largest household survey in the United States and provide detailed data for small geographic areas; in the current testing phase of the ACS, however, no New Jersey locations were surveyed.
