Pradeep K. Patnaik (Professor) received his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Microbiology from St. Xavier's College, Bombay (India), a Master's in Cell and Molecular Biology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo and a Ph.D in Genetics from Indiana University at Bloomington IN. He carried out postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Dr. George Cross at the Rockefeller University in New York and had a faculty (career-track) appointment at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in London, England prior to joining the department of Biology here.

Starting as a postdoctoral associate and then in his own laboratory in England and here, his research has focused on the molecular genetics of parasitic protozoa such as those that cause sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis) and malaria. He, and students who work in his laboratory, are currently engaged in defining DNA replication control elements in Trypanosoma brucei, and to begin an exploration of the relationship of these elements to the transcriptional /epigenetic control of gene expression in this organism. A close association between these two processes is an emerging theme in the study of several eukaryotes and is consistent with some of their recent findings. Their research has been supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and by several awards from this University in support of undergraduate research (CFR; ART; SURP).

Eight of the nine students who have worked in his laboratory over the past 9 years have won intramural as well as major extramural awards from state and national agencies (NIH; NJ Commision on Higher Education). Work carried out by these students has been published, many have won coveted research-oriented internships (Rockefeller University NY; University of Cambridge England) and most have won prizes for their presentations at regional undergraduate research symposiums (Five 1st place finishes & one 2nd place finish in seven appearances that were open to a prize).
