Hello Everyone,

Welcome to the MAEN 509- Mathematical Modeling Online

I will be your instructor to guide and help you learn basic ideas of mathematical modeling.

The main course objective is to introduce the student to the process of creating a mathematical model for real-world data.

The course consists of units, each exploring a different math topic and its applications.  Each unit is independent and has its own lecture notes and readings.  After reading the lectures or modules assigned in each unit, you should attempt to do the problems assigned at the end to make sure that you understand the material. Some of the assignments may be easy, others a bit frustrating. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any problems.

It is assumed that you are knowledgeable with

  • Internet surfing,
  • E-mail (sending and receiving attachments),
  • Plug-ins (installing and using them when necessary),
  • Inserting files (pictures, tables, etc) into a document;

and that you have access to

  • The minimum computer equipment required at all times (as described in http://www.wpunj.edu/cedl/dlfaq.html#9),
  • A unique e-mail account that you will use during the course,
  • Microsoft Word (or any compatible word processor).

Therefore, there will be no orientation for this course and we will not meet in person at any time during the course.

If you do not have the necessary equipment and computer skills to take this course, please drop the course and take it at a later time.

Please read carefully the requirement, assignment and grade pages. In particular, pay attention to the timelines and deadlines. It helps if you follow them carefully.

We will communicate in two ways:

1. Listserv: The listserv is the best way to send a message to the entire class. The address for the listserv is fall2004-maen509-80@LIST.wpunj.edu

Remember that any message sent to the listserv will be read by the entire group. If you are replying to an individual, use their personal email instead. Remember that using the reply option to answer a message from the listserv will send your message to everyone in the class.

2. Personal E-mail: It should be used when you send your questions and/or files to me or if you want to communicate privately with your classmates.

The course web site is http://euphrates.wpunj.edu/courses/maen509/   To access the site,  you will need a log in name and a password.

One of the pages of the web site is called Announcements. Please visit this page every time you log on since I will place there any  current important information about the course.

I look forward to working with you and I hope that you have a productive and valuable experience.
