QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

1.         What led to the policy of appeasement in the 1930s?  Why did Western nations such as Britain fail to understand Hitler’s ambitions in the 1930s?  Does appeasement ever work?

2.         What rationale (if any) lay behind Hitler’s "Final Solution”?  How did the mass killing come about?  What (if anything) could the Allies have done to try to stop it?

3.         Germany controlled most of continental Europe in 1941 yet fell to Allied forces in 1945.  What forces and events turned the tide of war?  Were internal or external pressures more decisive in Germany's defeat?

4.         Was President Roosevelt right in pursuing a Europe-first policy?  Given the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, should he have concentrated first on the war in the Pacific?

5.         How were the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki justified at the time?  Were we racist in using the bomb?  Would we have used atomic weapons against Nazi Germany, had they been available?

6.         What role did the US play in western Europe’s postwar recovery?  How did the success of the Marshall Plan shape Western policies and society in the 1950s?

What role did the USSR play in eastern Europe?

7.         What fundamental differences divided the two sides in the Cold War?  How did the Cold War between the US and USSR affect the rest of the world?
